QR codes for skateboarding
I picked metformin er 500mg side effects up a copy of Thrasher skateboard magazine a while ago, and I was really impressed how QR codes ( and a few MsTags) were being used throughout the magazine. I counted 8 QRs and 1 Mstag. I am so happy to share some QR code examples that are more targeted to the male demographic ( personally speaking that is, I see the business case for the female demographic). The action sports industry thrives on video and movement, so this seemed like a natural progression for me as a mobile marketing professional. However, not all the brands are taking this opportunity. I would much rather watch “jaws” ( a pro skateboarder ) clear a gap then see a picture of it. Even if its a 4 second video clip.
The question that remained in my head was why are not more brands in the action sports and entertainment industries taking advantage of this? As media shifts to be more online and available, it seems only natural to integrate print and mobile. I love skateboarding culture, but I think this could easily migrate to any other sport. I could easily see QR enabled baseball cards, or scanning an ad in a surfing magazine to see an amazing trick or interview from a pro surfer that I would have looked up to. As a brand manager, how can you not afford to make your print ads interactive ?
As brands begin to look more at experiential marketing, all print media should have the ability to be a touch point for something bigger. Mobile is a great enabler for those types of interactions where a guest or fan of a publication can develop a relationship with a brand through a great user experience. Action sports are just horizontal that is beginning to take advantage of the first half of this opportunity – imagine what they can do with mobile content.

I am also starting to see QR codes in magazines. I try to scan them all so that the web admins see that people are using them. For a similar reason, I don’t scan the MicroSoft ones.
One QR in a running magazine I have was too detailed and too small, so that the pixels blurred togeather, and I couln’t scan it even with my 5MP phone camera. I also saw a web linked QR code in an airplane inflight magazine. How are readers supposed to use then when their phones are in airplane mode?
